EY1920 Year Book
17 16 1 st Stop: Aberdeen, Scotland This was the beginning of my Enrichment Year, in the northeastern part of Scotland. Although the country has a poor, yet slightly unfair reputation regarding its weather, there are plenty of awe-inspiring landscapes that I was lucky enough to visit. From Fort William in the west of Scottish Highlands to St. Andrews in the east coast of Fife, it was exciting to explore all the heritage sites that the nation had to offer. Likewise, studying at the University of Aberdeen was a good experience to meet people around the world and be exposed to Scottish culture. I studied psychology and European history, something that I have not been able to do since studying for my GCSEs, so it was enjoyable to rekindle my interests in these subjects. The campus is only a 10-minute bus ride from the city centre, therefore it was easy to go out and relax during weekends and free time. Another great feature of the School is the Aberdeen Sports Village, which contains world-class sporting facilities and a great place for workouts. Overall, the semester was short- lived but unforgettable. Besides, there was downtime to travel in European countries, such as Austria, Norway, Finland and Iceland. One of the most memorable places was Tromsø, a city in northern Norway above the Arctic Circle. It was an exotic journey to arrive during the ‘Polar Night’ season where the sun did not rise during the day and hunting northern lights became the main objective. To encounter this natural phenomenon was truly memorable and sadly, the first part of EY came to an end! Colonial history dominates most, if not all, of the countries from this part of the world. Arriving in mid-March, it was meant to be the prime time to start my volunteering service with UmRio, an organisation that I had been in touch for a while. The ambition to connect young adults, who live in favelas, and let them determine their destiny by giving them the opportunities was something that I admired and was excited to be part of. Unfortunately, the journey did not have the opportunity to begin and I was advised to return home amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been challenging for UmRio to continue their activities, such as rugby training and English classes, because resources were limited and social isolation, albeit its importance in containing the virus, made things impossible to happen. In addition to that, participants of this NGO were struggling to find food for their families without a source of income, therefore decisions had to be made quickly to prevent further sorrow in the communities. The first initiative was a food security programme where families enrolled in UmRio would be given food, as well as cleaning and hygiene products through care packages. Another new activity, which I am keen to a member of, is the remote English classes for previous participants and newcomers. WhatsApp and YouTube videos will be sent regularly so that the youngsters can maintain a good level of academic performance and be ready once school reopens. Words cannot describe my disappointment with the loss of opportunity to be in Brazil and deliver face-to- face projects, but I am determined to be back in the future.
