Research Attachment – Evaluation of the accuracy of using artificial intelligence system to diagnose glaucoma – a clinical trial The purpose of the study is to evaluate the accuracy of diagnosing glaucoma using the artificial intelligence system we developed. How can we diagnose glaucoma earlier? Glaucoma is a common eye disease and the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. In recent years, the emergence of optical coherence tomography (OCT) has significantly improved the glaucoma diagnosis. Why OCT is a powerful tool for glaucoma diagnosis? OCT is a quick, non-invasive and radiation-free imaging technology with ultra-high resolution. It is a powerful diagnostic tool due to its capability to detect the structural changes prior to the presentation of functional loss. However, there are still limitations of this technique. The Department of Ophthalmology has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system based on machine learning algorithms to process OCT results, assisting ophthalmologists to make diagnoses. The research project served as a real- life clinical trial to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the AI system. The AI-aided diagnostic tool works well for the ideal conditions. How far can this technique be applied in real-life clinical settings? The importance of this study came with that the clinical situation is different from ideal or theoretical AI settings. To illustrate, the quality of OCT images was varying, and poor images were obtained from time to time during clinical practice. How environmental factors (e.g. refractive error) might affect the image was also investigated. This study played a leading role among researches on the application of AI to glaucoma diagnosis.
