A complete opposite from the maths and science I have been studying over the years. Other courses on exercise and health gave me a better insight of the benefits of exercising and how it can be an alternative to prescriptions. WH A T I G A I N E D Learned more about pathologies of gastrointestinal system and clinical research. Studying non-medicine related subjects made me more well-rounded and increased my exposure. Going on exchange in a non- English speaking foreign country, staying in the dorm and planning my trips to travel around enabled me to become more independent especially when facing obstacles and encountering unexpected situations, such as the sudden coronavirus outbreak. I also realized the importance of treasuring every single moment and to be thank- ful. Experienced the life of a surgeon, observing microscopic surgeries and OGDs, sitting-in GERD clinics, going on ward rounds. Researched on the correlation between dysphagia and GERD recurrence post- fundoplication with the EndoFLIP data. Studied European cultural identity and external relations of the European Union through analyzing readings and group discussions. Investigated on the theoretical and historical aspects of cultures while connecting the EU foreign policies and diplomacy to the current issues, i.e. COVID19 A R OU N D T H E WO R L D Exchanged in the country of bikes – Netherlands and travelled to other European countries including Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Sweden and Finland. Overwhelmed by the fascinating architecture and natural sceneries. Experienced different cultures and lifestyles. MBBS Enrichment Year 2019/20 But Cheuk Yun Sem 1 < R A - Q uantification of Endo F LIP p arameters in p ost - fundo p lication p atients at D e p artment of Surgery, HKU, Hong Kong >; Sem 2 < IC - HKUWW Exchange Programme at M aastricht University, the Netherlands > Sem 1 Sem 2 Learning from Home – HKU Electives I took five HKU courses: Portuguese, Introduction to Psychology, Exercise and nutrition; and to continue with my journey to learn more about Japanese culture, I have enrolled in Introduction to Premodern Japan, where I learn about Japanese history, and Globalising Japanese Food, where I am taught about the history of Japanese food and how Japanese food became a global sensation enjoyed by millions of people around the world. Exchange at Waseda University Tokyo Introduction: At Waseda, I took courses such as "Global Environmental Politics and Policies", which discuses how governments around the world attempt to set up policies to battle climate change, and "Vertebrate Palaeontology", which explores the origins of dinosaurs. Other than these subjects, I also took Japanese classes, which significantly improved my language skills. Outside of class: I took in traditional Japanese activities such as Ikebana, Shoudou, Sadou & Udon making etc. These allow me to learn more about traditional Japanese Culture. I also joined a Badminton Society in Waseda. I travelled in and out of Tokyo to explore Japanese culture in different regions, such as have visited Nikko, Yokohama, Sendai, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Kumamoto, to learn about how various parts of Japan differ from each other. Takeaways…: I’ve learned to over my uncertainties, opened myself to more new life experiences, and become more independent. By making friends from all over the world, I have gained valuable communication skills. Moreover, I have learned to plan my time better, as I need to balance my time between working and travelling! Finally, my understanding of Japanese culture and the language has substantially escalated, and this made me fall in love with the country even more.
