EY1920 Year Book
121 120 Leung Ho Man I stayed in Hong Kong and took some courses about public health for my enrichment year. Exposure to the field of public health during this year had been very exciting and eye-widening. I believe that skills and knowledge learnt from the various kinds of experiences during this year will contribute much to my personal development and be of much use in future practice. This poster is a brief account that highlights some memorable moments that I would like to share with you. A Marvelous Public Health Journey Course name: Principles of Public Health (3 credits) Teacher: Prof. Gabriel M Leung This is a course that provides students with a general overview of public health issues all around the world, for example, SDGs, tobacco control and mental health. I love the in-class interaction as our dear Dean’s was always able to guide us to think like a public health practitioner and tell us his opinions as a leading expert in this field. The in-class discussion was always vivid and all of us contributed to the in-class discussion proactively. The learning atmosphere of this course is really good and I admire the learning attitude of my classmates a lot. Dean’s unparalleled wisdom also impresses me a lot. The diverse forms of assignments allow consolidation of knowledge. Course name: The Practice of Public Health (3 credits) Teacher: Dr. Dennis KM Ip The teaching and learning mode of this course is very different from that of other courses. This is a very practical course where students were assigned into different groups. There were different tasks for every session. Students were asked to solve those scenario-based public health problems. Students can apply what they have learnt in other courses to the tackle the tasks. From the presentations of other groups, I realized that there are many different sensible approaches to tackle the same problems. Through learning from one another, one can observe blind spots of learning. At the end of every session, Dr. Ip gave us some feedback which refines our works. Course name: Intermediate Epidemiology (3 credits) Teacher: Dr. Catherine M Schooling This course builds on the introductory course Introduction to Epidemiology and more advanced epidemiology concepts were introduced. I always remember Dr. Schooling told us that epidemiology is a cerebral subject where things people do not know always pose threat to the validity of the results. She challenged the views of Nobel Prize winner on the need of representativeness in drawing causal inferences with credible evidence and scientific rigour. Although the course content is slightly more difficult compared to other courses, this course is so intellectually inspiring that students can learn good scientific thinking and the latest opinions and development in the field. I have learnt a lot from this course. Course name: Accounting and Financial Management in Healthcare (3 credits) Teacher: Dr. Sammy LK Fung This is an elective course that is offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics of this University. Accounting and financial management are entirely new to me. I know nothing about them before I took this course as one of my elective courses. Perhaps this is the reason why I find learning accounting refreshing and enjoyable. Cost control, interpretation of financial reports and budgeting were covered in the course. Only after taking this course do I realise there are so many financial details that require meticulous planning in healthcare setting. It would be important for clinicians to know the basics of financial management as it is possible that we would come across some problems of this kind in our career. Course name: Practicum (12 credits) Practicum site: Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, The University of Hong Kong I worked in the team of infectious disease epidemiology. The team has been heavily involved in the public health response of COVID-19 outbreak. As a result, my duties are highly relevant to their current projects. I prepared and edited some knowledge exchange materials for the team. Also, I provided some help to the team regarding the preparatory work of a study that is going to be launched soon. I am so privileged to have the opportunity to work in a a team where its members are all passionate about public health. Last but not least, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to all the great minds I have encountered this year, especially my colleagues at the practicum site, classmates whom I collaborated with and some of my awesome buddies from M23 who had given me so much support this year. ☺️ Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️ MBBS Enrichment Year 2019/20 Leung Ho Man Full Year < IC - MPH at HK U, H o ng K o ng > Overview of Minor “When it comes to health and well-being, regular exercise is about as close to a magic potion as you can get.” - Thich Nhat Hahnh The Minor in Kinesiology focuses on the scientific understanding of human physical activities and exercises. It is a multidisciplinary study encompassing physiology, biomechanics, nutrition and human diseases. This academic field has important implications on physical and psychological well being, competitive sports training, disease prevention and rehabilitation. Minor in Kinesiology Kinesiology is the study of movement. Kinesis as ‘movement’ in Greek. ENRICHMENT YEAR POSTER LEUNG LOK YIN Did you know? At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week is recommended by the WHO. Did you know? Exercise intensity at 70% of maximum heart rate is optimal for physiological adaptation. Did you know? The average caloric intake for weight maintenance is 2000kcal for female and 2500kcal for male. EXSC3017 NUTRITION FOR EXERCISE Nutrition is an important aspect of exercise performance. This course breaks down the individual components and strategies for dietary planning to achieve weight and sports gaols. EXSC 3019 EXERCISE AND CHRONIC DISEASES The many health benefits of exercise is well established. This course introduces new, non- traditional research findings in explaining exercise effect on cancer, inflammation, CVD etc. EXSC2003 EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY Introduction of physiological response to exercise, from biochemical energy metabolism to major organ systems e.g. cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, nervous system. Specific focus was placed on exercise testing during practicals. EXSC2007 EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION Practical aspects on designing specific training programs for individuals with different goals and needs. This course prepares students to obtain ACSM Certified Personal Trainer qualification. EXSC3018 BIOLOGICAL BASIS OF EXERCISE Practical aspects of precautions, testing and program design regarding physical activities for an array of chronic diseases. It aims to provide knowledge for safe and effective exercise prescription. Courses Highlight EXSC2009 EXERCISE BIOMECHANICS Analysing kinematics and kinetic components of sports movement may have important performance and training implications. It is also interesting to understand sports using mechanics laws. Reflection: My Learning Experience It was fascinating to explore the scientific aspects of human movement. Other than learning the theories, I have gained practical experiences in exercise prescription and testing . Through various laboratory activities and projects, I am more confident in reviewing literatures and working as a group. Most remarkably, this course has provided me with a different perspective in health and disease . Exercise provides numerous health benefits, from prevention to management of a variety diseases. The study of biochemical pathways of exercise effect on disease may also become a pharmacological target. I believe these learning experiences will be beneficial to my future learning and working as a healthcare provider.
