EY1920 Year Book

11 10 Semester 1: Studying abroad @ Waterloo, Canada From September to December 2019, I went to the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada as an exchange student. Semester 2: Investigating Eye Health @ HKU From January to May 2020, I was involved in a research attachment module at the Department of Ophthalmology. I focused on investigating the effect of lifestyle factors – such as tobacco use, second-hand smoke exposure, alcohol consumption, and exercise habits – on the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in Hong Kong residents. Academic Interests Taking courses from other disciplines has introduced me to many different perspectives. For example, my anthropology class explored how medicalization can be harmful – homelessness is oftentimes a result of poor societal infrastructure, but many continue to blame it on individuals and their conditions (e.g. mental instability). Exploring New Places Being able to visit numerous locations has renewed my appreciation of Mother Nature. From the astounding magnitude of the Niagara Falls to the pristine landscapes of Reykjavik, Iceland, my time spent abroad truly left a lasting impression on me. Cultural Immersion I met students from all around the world while on exchange, and learnt about their own cultures from them. I also participated in multiple local activities, like bonfire night, food festivals, and ballroom dancing. It was a great way to learn about another country’s values and traditions! Leaving the Comfort Zone The enrichment year is an opportunity for me to explore life outside of what I usually experience. Leaving my comfort zone has taught me many lessons and skills, all of which I will carry into my future studies and professions. Results While the average RNFL thickness shows a low negative correlation with the mean number of pack-years consumed, it is statistically insignificant ( p =0.135). There are no significant correlations between RNFL thickness and other lifestyle factors. This could be due to the small sample size, which is a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.
