EY1920 Year Book
117 116 Lee Tsan Ho Embracing public health education amid COVID-19 global pandemic Every experience in any life could be unusual. Yet, this year has been particularly unusual: as a public health student, we explore public health principles in a virtual classroom, mostly through Zoom -- thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. You may perceive this as a threat to learning; indeed it is a golden opportunity for us to embrace public health beyond a traditional academic setting. This exploration is not just about learning; it is actually an integration of lecture-based knowledge and social dynamics. Semester 1 Semester 2 Summer Sem A hectic semester dominated by core courses: - Introduction to Biostatistics - Introduction to Epidemiology - Principles of Public Health - Health Leadership & Management - Health Behaviour & Communication With the lone star elective: - Biological Basis of Diseases They provide insights into various dimensions of public health. The premature termination of semester actually exert negligible impacts on my exploration of public health! Classes return to normal in the first week...but swift spread of COVID-19 transformed all face- to-face courses to Zoom. Despite all the constraints, all courses were completed smoothly! - Perspectives in Healthcare Management - Accounting and Financial Management in Healthcare - Health Economics - Health Policy and Politics - Qualitative health research This is the time when we start our journey into our respective concentration areas, which has 3 courses (top 3) dominating the semester, apart from the health policy core course and qualitative research elective. The pandemic starts to subside...yet all classes are moved to Zoom. This is actually the critical period of my MPH study -- completion of practicum and capstone actually parallel the summer semester courses! Hence, time allocation is essential to task completion. - Health Informatics - Strategies in Health Care - Resources for Health (exploring economic principles in resource allocation for healthcare) Full-year integrated learning The COVID-19 pandemic is still evolving, but it couldn’t deter me from applying classroom -based public health knowledge in real-world setting. My practicum at acesobee, a health technology enterprise, serves as a golden opportunity for me to design promotion strategies to publicize redesigned medication labels based on health behaviour models, like the Theory of Reasoned Action. And the classroom knowledge is culminating into my Capstone project, which hopes to evaluate the Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme’s effectiveness -- and it’s still ongoing!
