Academics Heart in health and disease Understanding the role of ion channels in EC coupling and how defective channels can lead to heart diseases Neuroscience of pain Understanding of nociception and its descending control Neurological and Psychiatric Disorders To learn about the pathophysiology of major mood and psychotic disorders Research A systematic review on the use of heart rate variability (HRV) as diagnostic tool To critically appraise relevant papers Major finding: the effectiveness of HRV as a predictor for cardiac mortality is uncertain • A strong association is present between mortality and low HRV, which is weakly associated with the incidence of MI • The association between low HRV and cardiac mortality is most likely confounded by the effect of ageing • Most of the subjects who died were old-aged • Age has a greater risk ratio with mortality than HRV Work-life balance Trips, exploring new hobbies (cooking, coffee tasting) Soft skills Good time management Independence New study approach MBBS Enrichment Year 2019/20 Lau Yu Yan Full Year < IC - Intercalated degree at University of Bristol, UK > Semester 1 – Research attachment at Department of Ophthalmology Research Topic: Therapeutically potential of lutein on retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) Background : ROP is a common eye disorder in preterm babies. Therefore, we would like to investigate the effect of lutein on retinal vasculature. Animal model: Oxygen-induced retinopathy was induced in wildtype and Akita mouse as female breeders. Akita mouse has a mutated Ins2 gene, mimicking Type 1 DM in human. Neonatal mice and their nursing dams were exposed to 75% oxygen. Lutein or vehicle 10% DMSO was injected into littermate mouse pups intraperitoneally daily. Methodology: Since hypoxia in OIR models induces cell apoptosis in retina, measurement of retinal thickness (total thickness & thickness of 5 retinal layers) provides a general idea about retinal cell death. Discussion: Lutein-treated OIR group have a thicker GCL than DMSO-treated group in central and mid- peripheral region, which may be caused by neovascularization after OIR and the tufts mainly located in central and mid-peripheral areas but not peripheral areas. However, the effect of lutein treatment cannot be concluded yet due to small sample size. More examination should be done further to investigate its therapeutically potential. Semester 2 – Exchange program at the University of Sydney Courses take n: Criminology, Exercise and Nutrition, Bioethics, PTSD Rehabilitation School life : It is amazing to study at the University of Sydney. Unlike Hong Kong students, students here are enthusiastic at asking questions. I am a bit regret at choosing criminology, as I expected it to be about psychology and it turns out to be about justice system. Instead of staying in school dormitory, I lived with my friend at Sydney. We had not seen each other for a year, and it is wonderful to stay with her for a month. Travelling: This is my first time going to Sydney. Sydney is a bit more boring than I expected. Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge are quite beautiful though not impressive enough. Other tourist attractions, such as Sea Life Aquarium and Madame Tussauds wax museum, do not sound very interesting. It is a bit sad that I has not been able to visit Bondi Beach, as it is locked down due to Covid-19. Although I did not find Sydney fascinating, I do like the multi- cultural environment here. I have met people from all around the world, such as from Netherland, Jordan and Spain. It is nice to communicate with them and learn more about their local culture. Apart from Sydney, I travelled to Cairns during semester break. I learnt snorkeling and scuba-diving at the Great Barrier Reef. It is amazing to swim with sharks and sea turtles. I only stayed in Australia for around a month. Originally, I would like to visit Melbourne. However, we are forced to return to Hong Kong due to Covid-19 outbreak. Despite this, it is still amazing to exchange to Australia.
