MBBS Enrichment Year 2018-19

Enrichment Year E-Poster Chung Austin 3035379400 Semester 1 (Research Attachment / Common Core Courses) Semester 2 (Free Electives) For Semester 1, I did a research attachment at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department at Queen Mary Hospital. My project was to create a database of the treatment of bone metastasis with cord compression, and then review the data and conduct a data analysis on it. For the data collection part, I had to use the CMS system at Queen Mary Hospital to check past patient’s medical record. Then, I would copy down important details, such as tumour staging, treatment methods, mortality, post-operation complications etc. and use those data to create a database. For my Common Core Courses, I took 2 courses from the Humanities module this semester. One is about history, and the other is about war. Have the CC Course about war, we had to perform a drama act as our final assessment, which was quite fun. The war for our team was the Moro Conflict, a modern war in the Philippines that continues even today. Final Words For Semester 2, I took 5 courses at the University of Hong Kong. 4 of those courses were free electives, and the remaining one was a Common Core Course from the Science module. Out of the 4 free electives, 3 of those courses were Philosophy courses. Taking a friend’s recommendation, I wanted to try and study something new and interesting this year, so I decided to go with that. The courses I took were about Analytical Philosophy, Philosophy of Language, and Kierkegaard. These topics were quite challenging and abstract, I would say even harder to understand than medical courses! For the last free elective course, I chose one with a more familiar topic, which was a geography course about map- making. With my experience reading and studying maps due to my orienteering background, the course was a breeze, which lessened my workload so I could have more time for sports and trying other new things. This year was supposed to be a year of enrichment and enlightenment on our way to becoming doctors, and indeed this year has been one of the most impactful in my life, though not necessarily in a good way. Cause I found myself faced with numerous personal difficulties and failures this year, and to say that this year was a happy year for me would be a lie. Yet, despite all the setbacks and disappointments, I still found meaning and tried to make the best out of this year, and the experience this year has tested my resolve and passion, helping me prepare for the years to come.
