MY EXCHANGE JOURNEY TO WASEDA UNIVERSITY CAMPUS LIFE Waseda University is founded in 1882, which is a school with long history in Japan. The campus is so different from HKU, it is said to be a combination of Modern style design with traditional Japanese architecture. Walking in the campus everyday is so relaxing as their environment is so comfortable and they blended the idea of nature and modern while constructing the campus . ACADEMIC I study Japanese and Linguistics in Waseda University. I have learnt Japanese for a year in HKU before going to Japan, and I continue my study here. The greatest different between Japan and Hong Kong is that they put emphasis on self- learning. Teachers in lesson will not teach in a lecture-style, students are divided into different groups and discuss the grammar items, vocabulary. Hong Kong students may not get used to this style of teaching as we get used to being duck-fed under Hong Kong style of teaching in Primary school and High school. My Japanese improved quite a lot, the greatest contribution must be the great chance for me to use this language here. I met Japanese friends and communicated a lot with locals. Living here forced me to speak, at first, I was ashamed by my poor Japanese as I seldom have chance to speak in Hong Kong. Yet, after few weeks I see improvement and I gained confidence on speaking it. CULTURAL EXPERIENCE IN JAPAN BY ATTENDING MATSURI お祭り This is a very special event which is Japan’s own culture. To hold a matsuri in different periods in shrines. For example, the first matsuri I attended in Japan in September was the one held on Netsu Jinshya, there were different traditional Japanese shows, food and people will wear kimono, celebrating the matsuri together. People in the shrine will event take out their shrines’ treasurable statues and carry it to walk on street. Which is a very unique culture in Japan. SPORTS IN JAPAN As I am a badminton player, I tried to find out different opportunities to play badminton even when I am in Japan. I found that they have a very special culture that they like friendly matches a lot. The first time I went the the Shinjuku Sports center with my friend, we met a lot of University badminton teams there and we asked them for a friendly match. Both of us enjoyed it a lot as we found that the training style between Hong Kong style badminton is very different from those trainings in Japan, this is also a cultural exchange in sports.
