Symposium Information

Themes

The Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong is pleased to hold a Symposium cum Workshops on 'Assessment in Medical Education: Asian and International Perspectives', with the Asian Medical Education Association (AMEA) and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM) as affiliated organizers.

The Symposium and Workshops will provide an opportunity for exchange of experience and views as well as training of medical educators in different aspects of assessment. There will be sessions covering assessment models and tools for medical education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a specific session on 'professional assessment' to address professional training of doctors.

The themes of the Symposium are as follows:

  • Philosophy of assessment
  • Models of assessment
  • Standardization of assessment
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate assessment
  • Medical education outcome assessment

Concurrently held with the Opening Ceremony of the Symposium and Workshops will be the inauguration of the Institute of Medical and Health Sciences Education (IMHSE) of the Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong. The IMHSE is a new initiative of the Faculty to promote excellence, professionalism, innovation and collaboration (EPIC) in medical and health sciences education.

Plenary Lectures

International and local speakers will deliver plenary lectures on the following topics:

  • Overview on assessment in medical education
  • Assessing the assessment tools : reliability and validity of various approaches
  • The global physicians competencies: outline of pilot implementation of the IIME Project in China
  • Assessment based on standardized patients
  • Use of IT in assessment
  • Intern assessment
  • Assessment in postgraduate education: current practice and future directions

Workshops

Programme Directors: Prof CS Lau + Dr J Nicholls

There will be four workshops on setting questions and validation:

Workshop 1 Continuous assessment: logbook validation, student portfolio, and evaluation of student performance in a PBL setting
Workshop 2 Objective Structured Clinical Assessment (OSCA) and Objective Structured Written Examination (OSWE)
Workshop 3 Construction of minicases
Workshop 4 Construction and application of MCQ (multiple choice questions) /EMQ (extended matching questions) and structured SAQ (short answer questions)

Each workshop will be conducted twice. English will be the medium of instruction for sessions conducted on October 30, while bilingual sessions in both English and Putonghua will be run on October 31. Workshop material will be presented in both English and Chinese.
