Abstract:

RNs in clinical setting are the "FACE" of nursing. We need to embolden the Face as the "knowledge worker" for professional practice. As knowledge workers, clinical nurses should stay abreast of new knowledge in clinical practice as amount of healthcare information doubles every five years. Education and Credentials are requisites for professional (not occupational) nursing practice and that include BSN-DNP pathway and BSN-DNP/PhD pathway. DNP is a doctoral degree for advanced clinical nursing and it focuses on clinical decision-making, research utilization in clinical practice, organizational strategies to support science-based practice, creation and testing of innovative care delivery models, and outcomes assessment and evaluation. American Association of Colleges of Nursing decided to move the current level of preparation necessary for advanced nursing practice from the master’s degree to the doctorate-level by the year 2015. DNP is comparable to MD, DDS, PharmD, PsyD, DPT, AudD. 92 DNP programmes are currently enrolling students at schools of nursing in USA, and an additional 102 DNP programmes are in the planning stages. To establish a national standard for doctors of nursing practice, the non-profit Council for the Advancement of Comprehensive Care announced the National Board of Medical Examiners agreed to develop a voluntary DNP certification exam based on the same test physicians take to qualify for a medical license. Wall Street Journal carried an article, The Informed Patient: Making Room For 'Dr. Nurse‘ on 4/2/08. Ms Gleason (retired journalist) said that she liked the practice's emphasis on preventive care…"They are patient-oriented, and they always pick up the pieces, so to speak"…"Edwidge is my primary-care provider now."

Magnet Recognition Programme by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) epitomizes leadership in clinical practice. It recognizes healthcare organizations for EXCELLENCE in: Quality Patient Outcomes, Nursing Care, and Innovations in Professional Practice. In 2009, about 110 healthcare organizations received such recognition whereas it was one in 2003 when it began the programme.
