May 1999 Newsletter

From the Editor

This may well be the last ICSM Newsletter in its present form! Some of our members feel that the Newsletter should go electronic and be placed on the Internet and sent to each member by e-mail. Please let me know your e-mail address by filling in and return the enclosed form. I would also appreciate comments from you, especially if you have strong objections.

Area of Excellence

Cardiovascular Sciences, alas, has not been chosen by the University Grants Committee to be an AoE this time round. Whilst this is obviously a disappointment to us, especially to those who have put in a lot of effort and dedication in writing the proposal, we need to look ahead and continue our pursuit of excellence in research and clinical practice. In order to achieve that goal, we have a number of new initiatives. Firstly, research groups with a common interest (e.g. atherosclerosis, hypertension, hypoxia, myocardial protection) will be formed. Such groups will foster collaboration and will naturally lead to joint RGC applications. Secondly, there will be regular research meetings (e.g. Wednesday lunchtime) for members to give a talk. The first lunch time research meeting will be announced in the near future.

ICSM web site

We now have our own web site. The address is: http://www.med.hku.hk/icsm. A visit to our own web pages is strongly recommended. In fact, you will find this newsletter posted there. Our thanks to Heather Ballard and her husband Dr Steve Fleischer for creating this site.

Lecture announcement

Professor Alexander Turpie, Professor of Medicine at McMaster University, will deliver a lecture to the Institute on Tuesday, May 25 at 5.30 p.m. in the Lecture Theatre, Room 403, Department of Medicine, Professorial Block, Queen Mary Hospital, Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong. His talk will be entitled "Anti-thrombotic therapy in coronary ischaemia". Professor Turpie is a world authority on thrombolytics, low-molecular weight heparin and antiplatelet therapy. He was involved in the ISIS studies and the recent ESSENCE trial. We are fortunate to have a very distinguished speaker talking on a hot topic.

Research Assistant Professor

The post of a Research Assistant Professor is still open to applications. The appointment is for up to 2 years and the appointee should have a PhD in Medical Science and would be expected to undertake a project involving collaboration among members of the Institute. The candidate should have one or more sponsors who are teachers in HKU. The next meeting is provisionally scheduled on 30th/31st October 1999 in the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Building. Professor GW He will announce the details shortly.

Publications of members

We are preparing the Annual Report for ICSM. There will be a section listing the publications of our members (since 1996). Please find enclosed a form for you to list your publications. Alternatively, you might wish to send a publication list you have prepared or a photocopy of your publications. Not only is this a chance to show that you are active, it is also a good opportunity for others to know of your interests and expertise. I hope you can find time to complete this and return to: Dr Bernard Cheung, Department of Medicine, Queen Mary Hospital, Pokfulam, Hong Kong
