Happy Year of the Rabbit!

Lecture announcement

Professor Peter KT Pang, Program Director of the International Research Program on Traditional Chinese and Natural Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, will give a talk to the Department of Physiology and our Institute on Wednesday, March 17 at 5.00 p.m. in the Lecture Theatre 1, Li Shu Fan Building, 5 Sassoon Road, Hong Kong. His talk will not be on Traditional Chinese Medicine, but on "Parathyroid hypertension (hypercytocalcic) factor, a primary causative factor for low renin hypertension".

Visitor

Professor Cecilia Oakley visited Hong Kong in February as an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians. She met a number of us during her stay and agreed to read and comment on our Area of Excellence proposal.

ICSM on TV

Professors CP Lau and TM Wong had been interviewed by TVB about calcium channel-blocking Chinese herbs for the evening news. We shall arrange an interview on paediatric interventional cardiology in May.

Research grants

The Grants and Fellowship Committee has considered research grant applications and recommended the following awards:

  • $150,000 to Prof T M Wong and Dr M L Fung. The research assistant will be based in the Department of Physiology for one year.

  • $50,000 to Dr A K T Chau for a project on dobutamine stress echocardiography.

  • Dr Karmin O would receive a grant of $85,000 for a collaborative project with UBC.

Research Assistant Professor

The post of a Research Assistant Professor is available. The appointment is for up to 2 years and the appointee should have a PhD in Medical Science and would be expected to undertake a project involving collaboration among members of the Institute. The candidate should have one or more sponsors who are teachers in HKU. The next meeting is provisionally scheduled on 30th/31st October 1999 in the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Building.
