Research Postgraduate Programmes
Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Welcome to HKUMed! This page is meant to provide you with essential information that you will need throughout MPhil/PhD studies. Please take some time to read through the different sections so you will have an idea what lies ahead.

  • While your supervisors should be your first persons to go to if you have questions about your research project or studies, your Department/School is your home base and should be your first point of contact if you have questions about administrative aspects of your studies (e.g. leave applications, postgraduate stipends, etc.).  Each Department/School also has a Departmental Research Postgraduate Committee which manages all research postgraduate education matters and provides advice to you and your supervisors on your studies.
  • Departmental Contacts
  • Important Notes for HKUMed RPg Students
This document contains important information on requirements and procedures for the successful completion of your MPhil/PhD studies at the Medical Faculty.  This should be read in conjunction with the regulations, procedures, guidance notes, and Handbook for MPhil and PhD programmes issued by the Graduate School.

  2. For research postgraduate students in the School of Public Health, MMPH6002 Introduction to Biostatistics can be taken in lieu of Graduate School's Coursework Module 2: Introduction to Qualitive/Quantitive Research Methods but it will not be counted towards fulfilling the coursework requirement of 3 core courses of the Medical Faculty.

The RPS is an annual event organised by the Faculty to facilitate academic interaction and intellectual advancement among research postgraduate students and teaching staff. MPhil and PhD students are required to present at least once and twice respectively at the RPS during their period of study. Students who have presented at the RPS, if attended and assessed by their supervisor(s), can be considered as having satisfied the requirement for the Qualifying Research Seminar or Annual Seminar as described in “Important Notes for HKUMed RPg Students”.
