Hong Kong Summit of Global Health Leaders: More than 600 experts and leaders gather to consider major opportunities and challenges for modern medicine

More than 600 senior medical leaders, government officials and academics, including more than 30 eminent academics from Mainland China, Taiwan, Asia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Europe, attended the “Hong Kong Summit of Global Health Leaders” (the Summit), where they discussed the impacts of major developments, including the state of the global economy, precision medicine, and the One Road One Belt initiative, on modern medicine and medical education.

The Summit was organised by Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine (Faculty) of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) with co-organisers the Asian Medical Education Association (AMEA) and Chatham House, The Royal Institute of International Affairs. It was organised along the lines of the World Economic Forum, with sessions on such topics as the new international scientific approach ushered in with One Belt One Road, the distinct “East Asian” model in health sciences education, reforming residency training for the Belt and Road, and preparing tomorrow’s clinicians to practice precision medicine.

The launch ceremony was led by Hong Kong’s Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan; the Director General of Health and Family Planning Commission of Guangdong Province, Mr Duan Yufei; Regional Director of World Health Organization West Pacific Region Dr Shin Young-soo; Head and Senior Fellow, Centre on Global Health Security of Chatham House, Professor David L. Heymann; Chairman of Management Committee of AMEA, Professor CS Lau; and the Faculty’s Dean, Professor Gabriel Leung.  Among the notable speakers was Professor Jennifer A. Doudna, a prominent scientist who will be conferred the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa by The University of Hong Kong.

Shun Tak Holdings – Dr. Stanley Ho Hung Sun Foundation (Foundation) generously sponsored the Summit, which was its inaugural event, and presented a generous donation of US$1 million at a special dinner for the speakers that followed the Summit.  Professor Gabriel Leung said: “We are grateful for the Foundation’s generosity, which has provided us with a precious opportunity to meet with and learn from health leaders from around the world. We hope this Summit will help to advance closer working ties at the global level to build a better and healthier future for all humanity.”
