Professor Chia-Chin Lin, Head of the School of Nursing, HKUMed, in collaboration with HKU Centre for Sports and Exercise, has undertaken a 12-week pilot programme entitled “Improving Survival in Lung Cancer Patients: A Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial of Aerobic Exercise and Tai-chi Interventions”. The programme hopes to examine the benefits of exercise in late stage lung cancer patients. From July to September 2018, altogether 20 late-stage lung cancer patients joined the HKU “Exercise is Medicine” medical referral programme.
The studies findings, shared at a press conference jointly held by the University Health Services, the Centre for Sports and Exercise and the School of Nursing on November 7, 2018 revealed that exercise led to improvement in cardio-respiratory fitness, functional performance, quality of life, emotional status, and sleep quality. Five cancer patients from the aerobic exercise and Tai-Chi groups joined the press conference, speaking to the media about how their physical functions improved after joining the exercise programme.
