 A team led by Dr George Tipoe（鄭顏兒）, Assistant Dean (Enrichment Year) of the Faculty and Director of Bau Institute of Medical and Health Sciences Education (BIMHSE) and Dr Faide Ganotice, Jr, Assistant Professor of BIMHSE, developed the Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) initiative received the THE Awards Asia’s Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year in June 2023.

The programme has advanced knowledge and understanding of interprofessional education.  According to the judges, it was ‘particularly notable for its emphasis on preparing future medical practitioners through interdisciplinarity and interprofessional learning, bringing multiple perspectives to emerging healthcare needs.

Professor Kathryn Cheah Song-eng (謝賞恩), Emeritus Professor, School of Biomedical Sciences was elected as an European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Associate Member, in recognition of her outstanding academic achievements in the field of biomedical sciences. The EMBO Membership consists of more than 2,000 leading researchers in Europe and around the world, including 91 Nobel laureates, and Professor Cheah is the first in Hong Kong to receive this merit.

Professor Chak-sing Lau (劉澤星), Dean of Medicine, Daniel C K Yu Professorship in Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, Chair of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology has been elected as Member of Academia Europaea, as a tribute to his sustained academic excellence in the field of rheumatology. 

Professor Mak Tak-wah (麥德華), Honorary Professor, Department of Pathology, School of Clinical Medicine was conferred the 2023 William B. Coley Award, the highest scientific honour by CRI in Basic and Tumor Immunology. The Award is in recognition of his profound discoveries throughout his career, most notably the revolutionised contribution in establishing the foundations of T-cell immunology.

Professor Mak was also ranked nineth internationally in the field of Molecular Biology according to the Best Scientists Ranking by Research.com.

Professor Yuen Kwok-Yung (袁國勇), Clinical Professor and Chair of Infectious Diseases, Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine was ranked seventh internationally and first nationally in the field of Microbiology according to the Best Scientists Ranking by Research.com.

The following research projects were awarded the Healthy Longevity Catalyst Awards (Hong Kong) 2023 in the Healthy Longevity Global Competition held by the US National Academy of Medicine (USNAM), in support of the teams’ innovative ideas and research projects that could potentially extend human healthspan.

Dr Mak Lung-yi (麥龍兒), Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine was awarded the prestigious EASL Emerging Leader Award in July 2023, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to liver research.

Dr Yuan Shuofeng (袁碩峰), Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine received China’s Excellent Young Scientists Fund 2023 (Hong Kong and Macau) in September 2023 by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in scientific research.

Professor Malik Peiris (裴偉士), Tam Wah-Ching Professor in Medical Science and Chair Professor of Virology, School of Public Health was conferred the Degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, by the University of Oxford in June 2023.

Professor Hextan Ngan Yuen-sheung (顏婉嫦), Professor of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, School of Clinical Medicine was awarded Fellowship of AOFOG 2024 by the Asia & Oceania Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (AOFOG) in May 2024.

Professor Cheung Jason Pui-yin (鍾培言), Chairperson and Clinical Professor of Department Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine received two Best Basic Science Awards from the APSS 6th Annual Meeting @ Spineweek 2023 for the papers ‘Core Planar Cell Polarity Genes VANGL1 and VANGL2 in Predisposition to Congenital Scoliosis’ and ‘The Electromyographic Discrepancy of Paravertebral Muscles Predicts an Early Curve Progression of Untreated Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis’ in May 2023.

Dr Cheung Ka-shing (張嘉盛), Clinical Assistant Professor of Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine received the Asia Pacific Digestive Week APDWF-JGHF Emerging Leader Lectureship Award 2023 in June 2023 with the lecture entitled 'Big Data Approach in the Field of Gastric Cancer and Colorectal Cancer Research'.

Dr Fraide A Ganotice, Jr,, Assistant Professor, Bau Institute of Medical and Health Sciences Education received the U21 Health Sciences Group (HSG) Teaching Excellence Award 2023 in September 2023.

Dr Jojo Kwok Yan-yan (郭欣欣), Assistant Professor of School of Nursing, received the Emerging Nurse Researcher/Scholar Award presented by the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) in July 2023.

Dr Wendy Lam Wing-tak (藍詠德), Associate Professor and Head of Division of Behavourial Sciences, School of Public Health was elected as the President of International Psycho-Oncology Society (IPOS) in September 2023. 

Dr Lam also received the 2023 Distinguished Merit Award presented by the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care (ISNCC) in June 2023.

Dr Elaine Lee Yuen-phin (李燕蘋), Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology, School of Clinical Medicine, received the Distinction Award for Oral Presentation at the 22nd International Cancer Imaging Society (ICIS) Meeting and Annual Teaching Course in September 2023, for her presentation entitled 'Treatment Response Evaluation by PET/CT and CT after Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Advanced Ovarian Cancer'.

Dr Philip Li (李曦), Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine was appointed as Member of the 'Expert Committee to Investigate Recent Incidence of Drug Allergies and Their Aftereffects' by the Sri Lanka Ministry of Health in July 2023.

Professor Guan Yi (管軼), Daniel CK Yu Professor in Virology, Chair Professor of Emerging Viral Diseases, School of Public Health was ranked first in the field of Immunology in China according to the Best Scientists Rankings by Research.com.

Professor Kenneth Cheung Man-chee (張文智), Hospital Chief Executive of HKU-Shenzhen Hospital; Chair Professor and Jessie Ho Professor in Spine Surgery of Department Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine received the Shenzhen Physician Award in August 2023.

Professor Yuen Kwok-yung (袁國勇), Clinical Professor, Chair of Infectious Diseases, Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine, was appointed Honorary Dean of the Shanghai Institute of Infectious Disease and Biosecurity.

Dr Jasper Chan Fuk-woo (陳福和), Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine received the 8th VCANBIO Award for Biosciences and Medicine (VABM) (Innovation Breakthrough Award) in September 2023

Dr Hu Yong (胡勇), Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine and his team were named Champion of 'Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP)' contest and 'BCI Adversarial Attack Security' contest at the World Robot Conference 2023 in August 2023. 

 

Dr Tommy Lam Tsan-yuk (林讚育), Associate Professor, School of Public Health received the Zhong Nanshan Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award in July 2023 for his contributions to scientific research and innovation. He was the first and only recipient from Hong Kong receiving the honour.

 

Dr Loey Mak Lung-yi (麥龍兒), Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine and team's research paper was selected as 'The Top 10 Original Research Articles in Portal Hypertension and Cirrhosis 2022' by the Chinese Portal Hypertension Alliance (CHESS)

Dr Kendrick Co Shih (施愷廸), Associate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, School of Clinical Medicine Ophthalmology was appointed as a Founding Member of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) China in September 2023.

Dr Michael To Kai-chun (杜啟峻), Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine and his multi-disciplinary team for Osteogenesis Imperfecta at HKU-Shenzhen Hospital received the 3rd 'Golden Snail Award' for Medical or Scientific Achievement in September 2023.

Research project led by Professor Benjamin John Cowling (高本恩), Chair Professor of Epidemiology and Head of Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, entitled 'Improving Pandemic Preparedness by Reflecting on Experiences in the COVID-19 Pandemic from Different Perspectives' received Research Grants Council (RGC)'s Strategic Topics Grant 2023/24.

Research led by Professor Guan Xin-yuan (關新元), Chair Professor and Sophie Y M Chan Professor in Cancer Research, Department of Clinical Oncology, Centre of Cancer Medicine, School of Clinical Oncology, entitled 'Investigation of the Immunosuppressive Microenvironment in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma' was awarded the Theme-based Research Scheme 2023/24 funding by Research Grants Council.

Innovative project developed by Professor Christopher Leung Kai-shun (梁啟信), Chairperson and Clinical Professor and Dr Alexander Lam Ka-ngai (林嘉毅), Research Officer, Department of Ophthalmology, School of Clinical Medicine received the Health Partnership Awards 2023 (Digital Health and Technology category) as 'Outstanding Glaucoma Artificial Intelligence Diagnostic Platform' by ET Net in September 2023.

Professor Stephanie Ma Kwai-yee (馬桂宜), Professor, School of Biomedical Sciences received grants from The Croucher Foundation for the HKU Biomedical Sciences Summer Academy 2023.

Dr Will Chan Yap-hang (陳熠恒), Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine was awarded the RGC Clinical Research Fellowship.

Dr Cheung Ka-shing (張嘉盛), Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine was awarded the Young Investigator Research Grant 2023 by the Hong Kong College of Physicians.

Dr Allie Lee (李雅麗), Assistant Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, School of Clinical Medicine was selected by the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong as Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Distinguished Young Fellow 2023 in September 2023.

Dr Gill Harinder Harry Singh (喬夏利), Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine was awarded Sir David Todd Lectureship by the Hong Kong College of Physicians.

Professor Yuen Kwok-yung (袁國勇), Clinical Professor, Chair of Infectious Diseases, Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine, was conferred Honorary Fellow of the University of Hong Kong in 2023.

Dr Martin Cheung Chi-hang (張知恒), Associate Professor, School of Biomedical Sciences was appointed as Member of the Careers and Placement Committee of the University.
