140 for 140: Great Minds for Grand Challenges
Strategic Area: Emerging Infectious Diseases

HKUMed is a world leader in researching and providing global guidance on emerging infectious diseases such as Avian Influenza H5N1, SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. We collaborate closely with international organisations and universities in mainland China and around the world, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Institut Pasteur, and other leading public health and scientific institutions to contribute to public health control, infectious disease management and pandemic preparedness.

Our vision is to further develop Hong Kong as a global hub for innovative research on infectious diseases. Our goals include: translating basic discoveries about these viruses and their pathogenetic mechanisms into prototype vaccines, antiviral drugs and diagnostic tests; understanding the impact of genetic diversity and environmental conditions in determining how immune responses differ between individuals; and applying artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, epidemiology, operations research, and statistics to identify emerging pathogens, study the causal inference for disease control, and devise solutions for alleviating the burdens posed by vaccine hesitancy.

To further advance our interdisciplinary efforts in emerging infectious diseases, HKUMed is recruiting additional high-calibre scientists and scholars in multiple fields, such as microbiology, virology, immunology, epidemiology, bioinformatics, modelling and various public health fields to further advance its interdisciplinary efforts in emerging infectious diseases.
